Monsoon floods in India have left more than 1,000 people dead and millions homeless. They are reported to be the worst floods in 400 years. Gospel For Asia reports, "There is a monsoon every year, but never in history has there been one of this magnitude." http://www.gfa.org/gfa/latestnewsarticle
It rained non-stop for 10 days. Autumn Rain India (ARI) is based in Andhra Pradesh, one of the worst affected regions. A major highway from Andhra Pradesh was flooded, stranding dozens of vehicles. In Andhra Pradesh nearly 7,000 villages have been affected, making nearly 2 million people homeless. It is also estimated that more than 150 died in that state.
Most of the victims are in slums, where several ARI Pastors are ministering. The floods bring sewage and disease into the homes. Hundreds are dying from water-borne diseases. ARI Director, Pastor Charles Finney, reports, “Stranded people have not eaten for days. They are weeping over the loss of their homes and crops, and are now in total despair. They have nothing.”
ARI is setting up food distribution for the hungry and homeless. Autumn Rain has been able to send them USD$1200 so far – but they need 10 times more. ARI reports: “Many have lost their lives; many more are without food, shelter and water. Many villages in Andhra Pradesh were submerged under water for almost 10 days. So far, the Government has not initiated any rescue operations to meet the basic survival needs of the stricken people. Nearly 500 villages are still under water. We want to supply least 400 people with 5kgs of rice which will last them about 7 days. We want to help so many more …” Pastor Charles’ wife, Jessi and son Frederick, like many others, are sick with viral fevers.
